Generations of people from Saarland earned their daily bread here. A few were helped to unimaginable wealth. For others it signifies the loss of quality of life and permanent fear of the not always foreseeable consequences of underground mining: The mine has left its traces in this state. Not only the in the landscape or in the typical Saarland cuisine, but also in the cultural life or the views, virtues and life wisdom of the people of Saarland.
The exhibition »The Heritage« provides a comprehensive view of the technology and cultural history and the social significance of the mine in the region in a 1,300 sq.m space. An access system as spatial artwork was created under the direction of the curator Prof Jürg Steiner, consisting of crossing paths and layered levels. The public reach the upper floors via gently sloping ramps that also serve as room dividers. The distinctive spatial construction of System 180 is over 100 metres long. On the lower level there are large exhibits in a dignified presentation area on double angled pedestals of System 180.
